Ringo Starr
by
Alan Clayson

As an inveterate Beatles fan, I was naturally drawn to this book. Clayson does an admirable job of following Ringo from his early days in the rough Dingle section of Liverpool to his years as a Beatle and beyond.

Clayson's use of quoted interviews with people who knew and worked with Ringo is what makes this book so effective. I like the way he portrays Ringo as approachable, as somewhat humble about his stellar success as one quarter of the world's number one band. This is definitely worth reading.

The Beatles' Shadow: Stuart Sutcliffe & His Lonely Hearts Club
by
Pauline Sutcliffe, Douglas Thomas

A poignant memoir of the forgotten Beatle, Stuart Sutcliffe, and a remarkable account of the early days of the world's most influential pop group. Stuart Sutcliffe is the most famous contender for the crown of 'fifth Beatle'. One of the founding members, a close friend of Lennon, he left the band after their Hamburg sojourn in order to pursue his promising career as an artist, dying shortly thereafter of a brain haemorrage. For years his sister Pauline has tried to protect his memory against the Beatles' need to sanitise their early history and now she is ready to tell the real story. In doing so she sheds new light on their formative period - the rivalry with McCartney, how George Harrison tried to keep the peace, the truth about Stuart's intense relationship with Lennon and why Lennon was haunted by guilt over her brother's death. And she describes what it was like for those like herself and Cynthia Lennon who have lived with the Beatles in their lives all their lives, although this was not of their choosing. Drawing on her own memories as well as the many letters in her possession. Pauline Sutcliffe shares her unique insight into the young men who became the Beatles. But above all this book is a loving tribute to Stuart, who died at the age of twenty-one, but whose contribution to the Beatles lives on.

A Secret History
by
Alistair Taylor

Look at the first contract with Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein, and you will see only one other name—Alistair Taylor’s. by the band’s side from the very beginning, he beheld the inception and growth of the most extraordinary musical phenomenon of the last century. He was witness to the fun, the high life, the adulation, and the music. But he was also there when things started to go wrong: when George Harrison quit the band at the height of their success and when it all started to spiral out of control. And he reveals for the first time exactly what caused their break–up. Filled with many never–before–seen photos, this a must for fans. As Brian Epstein’s right–hand man, Alistair Taylor was with the charismatic manager when he first saw The Beatles perform at The Cavern. Taylor later became the band’s ever–present Mr. fix–it. He bought islands, handled paternity cases, and became a close and trusted friend. It was he who found Epstein’s body after his suicide and, in the reorganization that followed, Taylor went on to become General Manager of Apple, The Beatles’ record company.

Inside the Yellow Submarine: The Making of the Beatles' Animated Classic
by
Robert R., Dr Hieronimus, Laura Cortner

This book is the ultimate and exclusive resource for anybody interested in the clash between the gentle citizens of “Pepperland” and the hated “Blue Meanies” who threatened to rob the world of its color and music.

Until now, very little true research has ever been done about this memorable achievement in The Beatles’career. This book reveals countless facts about the movie from the man who has met with nearly everyone associated with the film. It includes photos depicting scenes and characters from the movie, as well as candid shots of many behind-the-scenes people.

Featuring original art from the movie, an introduction by Sir George Martin (The Beatles’ producer) and a foreword by Erich Segal (scriptwriter of the movie), this amazing book is for any fan of The Beatles’ music, movies or animation.

Beatletoons, The Real Story Behind The Cartoon Beatles
by
Mitchell Axelrod

This is a FUN book, plain and simple. It goes without saying that Beatles fans will be delighted, yet animation buffs and media students (even if they are not counted among the former) will not be disappointed. The process by which four real-life people were transformed into animated form is most fascinating. And the author has managed to find and interview many who were arms-deep into the planning and creation of the series. For Mr. Axelrod this must have been an exhausting project but well worth it, for what emerges is obviously a labor of love. The series, which seems to have had a loyal cult following for three decades after its last episode, actually predated "Yellow Submarine" by three years and served as a springboard for the latter, all hailing from an era when animation was done by hand to meet weekly demand. Profusely illustrated, my own favorite images from the book are the prototypal sketches where each of the "real" Beatles habits and idiosyncrasies are outlined as a guide in the evolution of their celluloid counterparts. And the section on the resultant merchandising from the TV series is amusing and must surely feature some new additions to the field. Mr. Axelrod has admirably filled a gap in the seemingly endless trail of Beatle history, striking a balance between the scholarly and fun, emphasis on the latter.

Turn Me On, Dead Man: The Complete Story of the Paul McCartney Death Hoax
by
Andru J. Reeve

In the fall of 1969, a rumor that Paul McCartney had died three years earlier in a car crash swept America. Started by deejays, the hoax gained momentum when a college newspaper article postulated that the other Beatles had replaced him with the winner of a hastily arranged Paul look-alike contest. They also allegedly planted clues to the tragedy in their records; e.g., a passage in their titleless white album supposedly says--when played backwards--"turn me on, dead man." National news reports spread the story further, and McCartney finally consented to give formal press interviews to lay it to rest. It lives on as an entire generation's cultural memory and was spoofed by Paul himself in the title and on the cover of his recent concert album, Paul Is Live. Reeve traces the hoax's origins and spread in maniacal detail, to the point of providing transcripts of radio shows and listing 70 of the Beatles' "clues" that Paul was dead.
