THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY

DVDGive My Regards To Broad Street (1984)

Critics were ruthless when Give My Regards to Broad Street was released in 1984, but the passing years have turned it into an offbeat curio from Paul McCartney's post-Wings era. The ex-Beatle was roundly panned for scripting this empty-headed vanity project, and it still qualifies as a mistake of sorts, dubiously combining new performances of Beatles classics with a few Wings hits and tracks from McCartney's popular 1982 solo album Tug of War. Most of these songs are performed as semi-lavish, blandly filmed production numbers ("Silly Love Songs" comes off like an embarrassing mix of Michael Jackson's Thriller and a Flock of Seagulls reunion), and the whole movie reeks of cheesy early-'80s New Wave/MTV influence, even in the casting of Tracey Ullman as a leather-clad Londoner with streaks of red hair dye.

The "plot" is entirely dispensable, consisting of "24 hours in the life of a rock star," in which Paul has until midnight to find the missing master tapes of his latest album, or lose his entire music empire to a slimy corporate takeover. (Parallels to Macca's loss of Beatle music rights to Michael Jackson are fascinating to consider.) It's all an excuse for a rambling, amiable mess of a movie, with slim supporting roles for Ringo Starr (who admirably refused to participate in re-recording the Beatles hits), his wife Barbara Bach, Linda McCartney, and, most inexplicably, Sir Ralph Richardson in one of many throwaway fantasy sequences. Critic Roger Ebert rightly called Broad Street "about as close as you can get to a non-movie" (which might explain why director Peter Webb never made another film), but the music's still good (look closely for Dave Edmunds and former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones), and we'd sure like a spin in Sir Paul's groovy vintage hot-rod.

DVDThe Beatles - Meet The Beatles

Featuring rare archive performances by the Beatles performing live in the USA; this is the powerful review of the album which launched the Beatles in America. By 1963 the rest of the world was gripped by Beatlemania. Only America remained unconquered. Capitol records promised manager Brian Epstein that they would make 1964 the year of the Beatles. Capitol were as good as their word. On the back of the ground breaking Ed Sullivan live appearances and the number one US album Meet the Beatles, the Beatles took America by storm. In April 1964 the Beatles occupied all five top positions on the billboard singles chart, a feat which has never been equalled. Meet the Beatles was carefully selected to introduce the band to a whole new continent and remains today a powerful record of the band emerging as world-class songwriters.

Features live performances of All My Lovin’, Till There Was You, She Loves You, I saw Her Standing There, I wanna hold you hand, This Boy, From Me To You.

DVDThe Beatles with Tony Sheridan (2003)

This DVD documentary from Universal is another "must have" for students of Beatles history. What might at first appear as another cheesy DVD cashing in on The Beatles' continuing popularity and 40th anniversary of the Beatles first visit to the U.S., this DVD was a pleasant surprise.

While this DVD does not contain any filmed footage from the Beatles' performances in Hamburg in their early career, it does include a variety of photographs from the Hamburg days accompanied by their recordings with Tony Sheridan. Many of the photographs are from the collection of Astrid Kirchher. Kirchher was a member of the Beatles' inner circle in Hamburg and girlfriend of Stuart Sutcliffe.

The documentary includes interviews with recollections by Tony Sheridan, Astrid Kirchher, Klaus Voorman, Horst Fascher and Allan Williams. The interviews are all presented in sepia-tone rather than color or black and white, which gives this documentary an artsy appearance.

DVDBeatles, The - Love Me Do - Documentary

Ever wonder what the Fab Four were like before they became The Beatles? Just what were those early years on the road like for John, Paul, George and Ringo? What led them to choose their now-historic band name? What really happened with original drummer Pete Best? And most importantly, what brought them all together in the first place? All these questions and more are answered for you in LOVE ME DO, the definitive documentary of The Beatles’ early years. A "must have" for any true fan of the Lads from Liverpool! This insightful and intriguing history of the band traces their existence from the very day John first met Paul at a church function, all the way up to their incredible rise to fame, and finally to their break-up many years later. Filled with previously unseen footage, and told through the eyes of Victor Spinetti, the actor who worked closely with the band in their first 3 films, as well as through the musicians and friends of the group, this story truly gives a vivid picture of the most successful band this world has ever seen. LOVE ME DO contains interactive menus and the special bonus - an interview with the band’s first manager, Allan Williams!

DVDBeatles - From the Beginning to the End

Beginning with their first performances in Liverpool and Hamburg nightclubs, this documentary follows the incredible rise of the Beatles to a worldwide phenomenon. There are many "behind the scenes" insights into the group giving us a glimse into John, Paul, George and Ringo rarely seen. Follow the boys on their journey from their first film, through the recording of Sgt Pepper, through John & Yoko's Bed In, and more. The saga ends tragically with John's death and John looking back and answering questions on life, drugs and peace. It's a stirring tribute to the four boys from Liverpool who changed the direction of popular music forever.

DVDInside John Lennon (Unauthorized)

There's no shortage of redundant documentaries about the life and artistry of John Lennon, but the 80-minute, unauthorized Inside John Lennon manages to cover the same old ground in a refreshing, thoroughly captivating way. The secret: a streamlined production making crisp use of file footage, film clips, and stills that haven't been over-exploited, an unsentimental tone, and an army of interviewees who knew Lennon in ways we don't often hear about. Among the latter are Tony Sheridan, for whom the early Beatles acted as a backup band; various members of Lennon's pre-Beatles group, the Quarrymen; Apple general manager Alistair Taylor; and Julia Baird, Lennon's sister. Choice audio quotes from Paul McCartney and George Martin are pure gold. Though the film covers familiar, major events in Lennon's life, the anecdotes and insights will strike most fans as new, while unguarded opinions of old confidantes are sometimes startling.

DVDBrian Epstein - Inside The Fifth Beatle

There isn't a lot of material on Brian Epstein out there and some of the newsreel footage is pretty cheesy, but this is a really interesting look at him, with some personal stories from people like his assistant Alistair Taylor and John's sister. It's worth checking out even if you don't get to hear Beatles music and the quality of the movie clips is all over the map.

DVDThe Beatles - The First U.S. Visit

Candid footage from the height of Beatlemania is to be seen for the first time to mark the 40th anniversary of their US debut.

The access all areas film recorded their first footsteps in America, capturing John, Paul, George and Ringo's effect on a massive new audience.

It is now on DVD, and includes groundbreaking moments such as The Beatles' legendary appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.

The intimate scenes were shot by pioneering film-makers Albert and David Maysles. They formed part of a black and white 40-minute film shown in the US and on UK TV in 1964. But the footage has now been upgraded and extended to 80 minutes using unseen footage.

And the DVD - called The Beatles First US Visit - also includes a 50-minute 'making of' with further scenes which have not been used before.

DVDConcert for George (2002)

Having had the privilege of seeing the actual concert featuring Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Joe Brown, Ringo Starr, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Dhani Harrison, Billy Preston, Jules Holland acccompanying Sammy Brown in George's last release before his death- a blow-you-away performance of "Horse to Water - an unexpected treat, Monty Python (with Tom Hanks featured), Ravi Shankar and his amazing daughter Anoushka as well as the film, I can tell you that both are uniquely enjoyable. The DVD will give the advantage of providing both, one on each disc.Do see it in the theater if you can, for that big-screen, being-there effect, but try to catch it in a theater with decent sound! I saw it in two theaters, one with surround (sounded fabulously realistic) and one with a sytem pathetically inadequate to the subject. The film and DVD were mastered by muscican/producer extraordinaire Jeff Lynne, who pays great attention to detail to produce perfect sound, so if you saw it in a less-than-wonderful theater, know that the DVD will sound fantastic on a decent system. Also, while the film wonderfully interjects short interviews and scenes from rehearsals, etc., which are quite enjoyable, know that the actual concert is longer and you can see it in its totality on the second disc. It will surely touch your heart - lots of love projected - and DO stay for the end credits for something you won't want to miss.

DVDPaul McCartney - Music & Animation Collection

Being a wealthy ex-Beatle has its advantages, and with his enchanting Music and Animation Collection, Paul McCartney shares his creative privileges with the rest of us. "Macca" served as executive producer, composer, and voice artist for this delightful trio of shorts, and animation director Geoff Dunbar deserves ample credit as well, along with his talented team of collaborators, since their work here is every bit as impressive--and arguably more entertaining--than anything in Fantasia. "Tropical Island Hum" discreetly advances the late Linda McCartney's vegetarian cause with its charming sing-song by a variety of animals who've been neglected or abused by humans... including a frog who lost a leg to "some French guys." Dedicated to Linda McCartney's memory, the dreamily amusing "Tuesday" (based on the award-winning children's book by David Wiesner) offers the fantastical vision of jubilant frogs on flying-carpet lily pads, floating merrily along on their nocturnal adventure, entering the homes of unsuspecting humans and, just as quickly, hopping to earth again as their magical night gives way to sunrise. Amiable amphibians also star in "Rupert and the Frog Song" (originally produced to accompany McCartney's 1985 film Give My Regards to Broad Street), in which the beloved children's book character, Rupert the Bear, witnesses the once-in-a-lifetime vision of frogs performing a glorious midnight concert. All three of these wonderful shorts celebrate nature, animal welfare, and the imaginative innocence of childhood, and McCartney (working with Beatles producer George Martin) can be proud of his role in their creation.

DVDPaul McCartney - Paul Is Live in Concert

Sir Paul's live performances are actually improving as he gets older, which makes this document from his early '90s touring days arguably better than his '70s dates but not up to the level of his triumphant new millennium concerts. However, this is a Beatle we're talking about, and how bad can it be to hear immortals like "Drive My Car," "We Can Work it Out," and "Here, There and Everywhere" sung by one of their creators? The problem is the newer stuff. Props to McCartney and band (including then-wife Linda, guitarist Robbie MacIntosh, and guitarist-singer Hamish Stuart from the Average White Band) for refusing to merely wallow in nostalgia. But tunes such as "Biker Like a an Icon" and "Peace in the Neighbourhood" are no great shakes any time; placed side by side with "Hey Jude" and "Yesterday," they fare even less well. A bio and photo gallery are included.

DVDThe Beatles in Washington on 11th Feb 1964

As if there were any doubt, this February 11, 1964 show (just days after their triumphant debut on Ed Sullivan’s TV show) proves that the Beatles were one rockin' little combo, whatever the situation. The sound was awful, the din of the audience almost constant. Also, the concert set-up was in-the-round--but only Ringo Starr's rickety little drum riser could rotate, so during several songs the other three Fabs were obliged to turn their backs on their own amps to face the rest of the audience! No matter; they roar through their eight-tune set with palpable, irresistible energy--just check out "I Saw Her Standing There." Sure, the black-and-white footage is grainy, and the audio's lousy. But this document of the group at their early peak is a must-have for true believers. Considerable file footage and audio clips from the period help fill out both the concert program and an accompanying trivia quiz.

DVDThe Beatles DVD Collector's Set ~ DVD

This four-disc set includes two feature films and two documentaries (all previously available on DVD). Help! (1965), in which a religious sect is in pursuit of a sacrificial ring stuck on Ringo's finger, is a broad spoof of the spy flicks of the time, with James Bond-like themes and locales. Songs include "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" and "Ticket to Ride." Only two years later but strikingly different in mood and tone, Magical Mystery Tour (1967) is chiefly a series of psychedelic music videos, including "Fool on the Hill," "I Am the Walrus," and "Blue Jay Way," loosely organized around a plot of a bus trip through the English countryside.

The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit is an 83-minute black-and-white documentary by acclaimed directing brothers Albert and David Maysles that captures the group's trip to the U.S. in February 1964. It includes plenty of songs as performed on The Ed Sullivan Show, of course, as well as footage of the band riding the train or sitting in their hotel room watching television coverage of themselves. A subsequent performance in Washington, D.C., suffers from grainier footage and spotty microphones, but still captures the frenzy of the fans.

You Can't Do That!: The Making of "A Hard Day's Night" is an hourlong documentary that traces the creation of the historic 1964 film. Hosted by Phil Collins, who appeared in the original among a crowd of screaming teenagers, the film features extensive clips and interviews with those involved with the movie (though George Harrison is the only Beatle whose voice is heard). A highlight is "You Can't Do That," a performance that was cut from the original film. Obviously, a perfect DVD set would include A Hard Day's Night itself, but rights issues have kept it out of circulation.

DVDBack In The US 2002

Like millions of others, I first became captivated by the Beatles in 1963, and this brilliant concert film recaptures some of that excitement. The set list is fabulous, the behind-the-scenes stuff is excellent. But what makes this DVD so special is the interplay between a marvelous artist and an audience that adores him and his music. Paul McCartney may be 60 or so, but his voice and energy and humor are those of his younger self. Most of the songs are from the Beatles era, and the rest from the best-known Wings periods. He sings and plays them faithfully, and with gusto. But the audience is almost as much fun to watch. It's amazing to see boomers laughing and crying and dancing like crazy, but it's also incredible to see little kids, college students, people in their 20s, 30s and 40s, singing every word, from memory, and just basking in the moment. It's a hugely enjoyable CD for anybody who loves the Beatles catalog, and that's a lot of people.

DVDEd Sullivan's Rock 'n' Roll Classics Boxed Set

With a total of 144 songs (including repeats) and well over 500 minutes of playing time, this massive boxed set, whose nine discs each contain between 12 and 19 performances, truly is, as host Ed Sullivan famously said, "a really big show." With some 20 songs between them, the two most important rock acts of the 20th century, Elvis Presley and the Beatles, both of whom received huge career boosts from the Sullivan show (garnering a reported 80 percent audience share and 70 million viewers, respectively), are well represented; so are other genres, like Motown and '60s rock. And wonderful, galvanizing performances by, among others, the Jackson Five (especially "the little fella in front," as Sullivan calls Michael), the Animals, James Brown, Janis Joplin, Jackie Wilson, the Rolling Stones, and even the Association ("Along Comes Mary") are enough to counter the curious inclusion of the Brooklyn Bridge, Jay and the Techniques, and other obscure minor talents.

DVDBeatles: Big Beat Box
[Collector's Edition] [IMPORT]

This unique 50-minute DVD traces the extraordinary rise of the Beatles from their early days in the clubs of Liverpool and Germany to their undisputed status as the world's most successful "pop" group ever. Watch the astounding events unfold as Beatlemania swept through the UK, across the USA and exploded throughout the world. This is very much the Beatles in "their own words," giving interviews with the press at critical moments in their career as they progressed from adorable "mop tops" to cultural revolutionaries.(NOTE: Songs on CD are not performed by The Beatles.)

The video footage is largely news and local TV footage separated with interviews with people who knew George, such as a friend from school. There is an interview with George Martin from just after George died and news footage of Paul McCartney with his comments.

Amazing that a nearly hour-long film about a Beatle that contains almost no music could still be worthwhile, but that's the case with John & Yoko's Year of Peace. DVDJohn Lennon: The Messenger

A collection of Lennon interview footage comprising a DVD, audio CD and 32-page "super colour" booklet, John Lennon: The Messenger is rather optimistically billed as the "Essential John Lennon", an impression the makers hope to consolidate through imperiously smart packaging. Be sure to read the small print on the back, however. This is an unofficial programme and as such does not contain any music or performances by either the Beatles or John Lennon. Where music does occur, it's in the form of Beatles-esque jingle-jangle courtesy of the splendidly named Dennis Pugsley and the Overtures.

VHSImagine: John Lennon - The Definitive Film Portrait (1988)

John Lennon posthumously narrates his life, with input by Yoko Ono, former wife Cynthia, sons Sean and Julian, and friend Elliot Mintz (those other three guys declined to participate). Film certainly captures moments; his youth, Beatlemania, Yoko, the "Bed-in", his deportation troubles, etc. But other unsavory elements aren't mentioned; such as his brief heroin addiction, and even though May Pang offers comment, his affair with her is only touched on briefly.

Ringo Starr hits the road with another group of well-known rock accompanists in this 80-minute program, recorded in 2001 at Chicago's Rosemont Theater.
